She continues: "There’s been a fascinating contrast around the globe in recent years: on the one hand, the rise in very outspoken atheist movements encouraging us to abandon completely our notions of God and trust exclusively in human effort. On the other hand, a dramatic rise in religion around the world, as more and more people realise that their efforts alone aren’t enough to fill the void within, which demands a greater sense of purpose. When it comes to fulfilling our destiny in work and life, faith surely plays a central role in acquiring the courage to keep going, despite all the challenges and drawbacks which arise. In this issue, we’ve featured a number of women who’ve chosen career paths informed largely by spiritual power. From gospel queen Rebecca Malope (Reign Check, p30), whose enormous following attests to the resonance of the faith she sings about with millions of South Africans, to philanthropists like Mavis Mathabatha (Sowing the Seed, p90) and Doris Msibi (Power With a Purpose, p107), who are committed to creating opportunities for less privileged people to live in good health and achieve their dreams."
