(Lifestyle: General Lifestyle) South Africa's first Afrikaans glossy, turns 21 in July 2006. This year, apart from the four regular annual issues, a special collector's edition will be published in July, while December will see an extra DEKAT in English! DEKAT's front covers are as trendy as ever, and represent South Africa's most prominent personalities at their best and most interesting. In 2002 DEKAT was taken over by African Sky Publishing and is produced under the auspices of owner/publisher Elzilda Becker, who has dramatically changed and improved the magazine. It has also changed from a monthly to a quarterly magazine. DEKAT has been awarded the bronze and silver SAPPI Printer of the Year medals on two occasions. The publication's goal is simple - to “enlighten, stimulate and dare Afrikaans readers, as well as to challenge and expose.” When African Sky Publishing took over the magazine in 2002, a three-year plan was put into operation, preparatory to its being certified on ABC in 2006. African Sky Publishing has reached this goal, and in 2006 DEKAT will again deliver ABC numbers. Some facts and figures: 35% of readers fall into the 35-49 age bracket, with an additional 31% falling into the 50+ category. DEKAT is distributed nationally, but has a 40% concentration in the Western Cape and about 24% in Gauteng. 58% of the publication's readers and female and 79% of them are white. Despite the publication being hugely supported by the Afrikaans market (over 80%), about 10% of readers are English speaking.
