The Tembisan was established as a community newspaper in 1990 to serve Tembisa, home to 1.5 million residents. It began distributing 30 000 copies a week for free.
However, due to the huge demand and the fact that the publishers could not print the approximately 100 000 copies a week needed to satisfy this demand, readers requested the newspaper be sold. In 1993, the paper reduced its print run to 10 000 copies a week and was made available for 30c.
Readership has shown constant growth and currently there is a demand for 20 000 copies a week. The paper is a valuable tool for local businesses to meet their advertising needs.
The Tembisan comes out each week on a Friday, and all articles are written in English. Its circulation of 10 000 copies is distributed to Tembisa, Ivory Park, Kaalfontein, Olifantsfontein and Kempton Park.
The paper is represented by the Newspaper Advertising Bureau (NAB).
