Four of the Miss South Africa pageant finalists for the year 2011 were eliminated: Cindy Rosslind, Dannalize Clarke, Charlotte Smith and Karlien Gericke. The four contestants, who hailed from the Western Cape and Johannesburg, were saddened by their elimination but grateful for the opportunity and the experience afforded to them by the Miss South Africa pageant.
When it came to choosing the 12 finalists, the judges had to bring out their full cache of interviewing and judging skills to select the finalists that they believed would best represent South Africa both locally and internationally.
The Miss South Africa finalists for 2011 are: Lwandle Ngwenya, Thuli Sangweni, Melinda Bam, Remona Moodley, Frieda Du Plessis, Sian Schlebusch, Lerato Mokoena, Caylene Marais, Rolene Strauss, Tamerin Jardine, Grace Rheeders and Pinky Mathope.
This year the judging panel includes: principal judge and former Miss South Africa, Sonia Raciti-Oshry; Joan Ramagoshi (former Miss South Africa and businesswoman); Sonia Booth (former Miss South Africa second princess and model); Kieno Kammies (talk show host and journalist); Gert Johan Coetzee (fashion designer) and Paledi Segapo (fashion consultant).
The judges follow the same judging criteria used at the Miss World and Miss Universe competitions. “Obviously the winner will be competing on the international stage and therefore she has to have the qualities these judges are looking for. Beauty and a superb body are essential, as are purposeful charitable intentions, good public speaking abilities and networking skills. She has to be an all-round sophisticated woman that can interact with all types of people; from children to government ministers,” emphasises Raciti-Oshry.
As a way to induct the girls into social responsibility projects, 16 of the semi-finalists lent their support to two orphanages: Banakekeleni Orphanage and Thuthuzela Aid Community Centre, both located near Alexandra Township.
The winner of Miss South Africa represents South Africa internationally and locally and plays an important role in various Sun International corporate social investment projects. She interacts both socially and in a business environment with influential leaders in society. Not only do you have to have beauty and a bikini-perfect body, able to compete on the world stage against international beauties, but you also have to be compassionate, intelligent and charitable.
Miss South Africa will take place in Sun City on Sunday, 11 December and will be broadcast on Mzansi Magic at 17:00, with a behind-the-scenes special at 16:30.
