Lot is enacted in an open field across a train station. The piece is saturated with the matter that we all will return to, trying to adjure the serious with irony and laugh while it looks death in the eye. Canaries, pop stars and tennis lovers slam on brakes in front of the gate that leads to death. Here everybody walks around with one foot in the grave, heads screwed on wrong but they still want to take a last glance at the stars. When the hourglass is shattered, it does not help to argue, ‘you want more’. Hanekom brings new theatre that does strange things to your head and your heart. Lot is composed like a symphony, with so many elements and clever variations that you keep on experiencing something new.

Betésda is enacted in and around a swimming pool. A blind, deaf, an insane, a physically disabled and a fat person are waiting for the angel to stir the water. The first person to get into the water will be cured, but the angel has already drowned in her sorrows in the beginning of the play. These miracle expectant people are all left to the wickedness of a sly herdsman and a lifesaver who thrives on the taking advantage of the vulnerable.

Babbel is written to be performed around a cellphone tower or radio mast. Somewhere in the future in the aftermath of a revolution, rebels are guarding the last existing cellphone tower. Threats of war are eminent on the border of Oudtshoorn. The forgotten are the names of the deceased. With the lunacy of violence carved in their minds language gradually deteriorates and chaos of war creeps deeper into people’s hearts. The louder the transmission of the signal, the more the echo of silence. The price of freedom is high.
