The auditions are open to all genres of local music such as Kwaito, Afro Pop, and Maskandi to name a few. The Ziveze Music Knockout is sponsored by the National Lottery which is committed to the development of the arts and the preservation of South African culture and national heritage.

The project is the brainchild of Sandile Matsheni a young theatre actor from Soweto who has toured the world. He was later joined by Tebogo Dey Gasetlole - a vibrant actor, poet, singer, choreographer and writer. It builds on the success of their work in developing young people in Soweto through music, dance, drama, poetry, modeling etc. They have already helped many young people especially from historically disadvantaged communities in Soweto. Their effort has contributed to the reduction in the number of youth that roam the streets of Soweto, engaging in criminal activities as well as vices such as alcohol and drugs which can expose them to HIV/AIDS. The Ziveze Music knockout is therefore another effort to spread what Sandile and his team have achieved in Soweto, to the entire Gauteng province.
