Says Smile Breakfast presenter, Eloise Pretorius: “The first six months on air have changed my life and stand out as the most rewarding six months of my career. It has been an honour to broadcast to the most colourful audience in South Africa and having a mentor in Clive Ridgway.” Pretorius adds that her most enjoyable interview over the last six months was with adventurer Riaan Manser. “He is a wonderfully inspirational and principled guy. Listeners can expect more from our incredible Celebrity Wednesdays on Smile Breakfast, and things that will inspire like no radio ever has.”

Benito Vergotine, who takes over from 09:00 to Noon, says it has been a whirlwind since the beginning. “It has been very busy, exciting and an enormous challenge. I’ve experienced so many highlights, from the interviews I’ve done to working with amazing colleagues. To single out one interview would be a little unfair. I enjoy interviewing and each one is unique in the way an interviewee responds. I definitely prefer face to face, and those are the ones that stick out for me. I enjoyed chatting to the guys from Solomon's home, Jon Vlismas and Kumi Naidoo - although Kumi was telephonic, he was someone I had kept an eye on ever since WEC (World Energy Council) few years back where he was quite vocal in his demonstrations about global warming. Listeners can enjoy the continued evolution and growth of Smile90.4FM over the next few months including more music variety and more compelling talk. And more chances to interact with the brand! I'd certainly enjoy meeting our listeners.”

Danie Marais, who is on air from Noon to 15:00, loved his first six months on air. “I can’t believe it’s really been half a year. I’ve always thought great radio is not about broadcasting but about sharing – great stories, music, information and jokes. The intimacy of the medium is where the magic lies, and these first six months have confirmed that for me in a big, energising way. Realising at regular intervals via the Internet but in all sorts of real places – in random conversations at kiddies parties, gigs, outside broadcasts, dinner parties and in shops – that Smile 90.4FM is really connecting with the people of Cape Town and is spreading good cheer, has definitely been the highlight for me. On air, I had fun with comedians like Marc Lottering, Siv Ngesi and Mark Banks. Breyten Breytenbach and Valiant Swart were great conversationalists, but chatting to Bonnie Tyler whacked me on the funny bone. There was something a little surreal about her Welsh accent and the fact that she was gearing up to have a Total Eclipse of the Heart in the CTICC.” With regards to the rest of the year, Marais does not want to spill the beans. “I’m excited about two or three new features for my slot, but it’s still in the planning and demo phase. I don’t want to say anything yet.”

Smile Drive presenter, on air from 15:00 to 18:00, Maurice Carpede, says it has been a rollercoaster ride. “I can’t believe it’s six months already. Cliché I know, but time does fly when you’re having fun. The past six months have been fun. My highlight was that first day when we went on air on 25 March - the nerves, the excitement, everything. The realisation that from that moment on there was no turning back. Smile 90.4FM was going to be an integral part of the people of Cape Town’s lives. Initially I did the Smile Drive alone, but another highlight for me was when my co-host and producer of the show, Cato Bekker joined me. The difference she has made to the show and me is just amazing. I think we make an incredible team.” The interviews that stand out for him was with SABC3 Talk host, Noeleen Maholwana-Sanqu and with Stelio Savante, a South African born actor who now lives in the USA. “Noeleen is such a bubbly and inspirational person and we had so much fun on air with her. We spoke to Stelio about 9/11 on the twelfth commemoration of that tragic event that changed not only the US, but the world forever. He related a very touching story of a lady who had lost her husband during the attack on the World Trade Center and while he told us the story, he choked up in tears and left Cato and I also very teary eyed. These two interviews stand out for me personally. Not that any of the interviews we did was insignificant or not important at all. Every single one of our interviews and on air content has relevance for the people of Cape Town. Listeners to the show can expect more fun, more great radio, more music and more talk, and loads of laughs and good, positive vibes.”

For Tracey Lange, who is on air from 18:00 to 21:00, the first six months have been wonderful. “Getting to know my colleagues and forming great relationships that I’m hoping and praying will last for a lifetime, have been my highlights. Listeners to my show can expect lots of new things, lots of reasons to smile and to be inspired to pay it forward and do good.”

Lange is followed by Smile 90.4FM’s Love Doctor, Mehboob Bawa, from 21:00 to 24:00. “There aren't enough adjectives to aptly describe how I feel about my first six months on air with Smile 90.4FM. The station's core values of inspiration and empathy resonate with me perfectly. My show, Smile Love Songs, epitomises all that Smile stands for. I truly believe that through our unique approach, simply having a conversation with our listeners about matters affecting them on a daily basis, we have touched the hearts of many. The single most important highlight for me has been the creation of the ‘Love Lounge’ - a space on the Smile 90.4FM Facebook wall where every evening's show topic is posted. The enthusiasm and joyful conversations certainly makes for enjoyable reading. Through this medium, we have created a platform for listeners to meet their friends every night and even create new friendships. Listeners share their wildest dreams and amazingly, without possibly even knowing each other, provide inspiration for others whom might be facing challenges in life. Together with the programming and content team, we’re working on some new ideas with some potential guests that will make a positive contribution to the show and the station. Let me just say, watch this space.” Aside from presenting Smile Love Songs, Bawa also does a regular stint on a Friday afternoon with Danie Marais called Film Friday.

Clive Ridgway, programme director at Smile 90.4FM, adds: “I can say with a great deal of confidence that the past six months have been a period of personal growth for every one of the broadcasting professionals who have come together to drive this movement we call Smile 90.4FM. The team's spirit, and their focus on our promise to inspire, inform and entertain has been nothing short of astounding. This country has never seen a more qualified or well intended team come together to so something of significance through the medium of audio communication.”

Ridgway continues: “Smile's intention is that our positive values and purpose shine through every facet of what we do. We understand the obligation we have to do more than create a thriving and sustainable business. As custodianship of the 90.4FM broadcasting frequency in Cape Town, we remain mindful every day of creating content of real value to all in our region. Smile 90.4FM is beginning to take hold as a positive messenger in the greater Cape Town and our reputation as a fresh, lighter and more flexible alternative to the commercially top heavy and prescriptive established radio brands, is spreading nationally. We are attracting powerful brands, which recognise the positive values we have in common with theirs, to our airwaves.

“We’re celebrating our six months on air with a special Breakfast Show of Gratitude in which we will be talking to and thanking our top six advertisers namely MTN, Altech Autopage, FNB, Lion of Africa, Sun International – Grand West, Imperial Select and Old Mutual for supporting us during our foundation period.”
