Hazel Friedman scoops top journalist award for her story on the Cape of Wars

Hazel Friedman an investigative journalist, TV producer, art critic and author, scooped an award at the Vodacom Western Cape TV Journalist of the Year for her story on Special Assignment on the Cape of Wars. The award was for Best Television Feature in the Western Region.
The award was for Best Television Feature in the Western Region. Her programme was up against other popular programmes such as Carte Blanche and other thought provoking documentaries from other television networks. The Cape of Wars was aired on SABC3 in August 2012.
In this two-part programme, Special Assignment provided an analysis of the situation in Lavender Hill, the gangs involved and the uneasy truce being brokered by former gangsters-turned-peacemakers. The programme also looked at the efforts by the city and the province to protect a community under siege.
The documentary was filmed by SABC News cameraman, Marc Mullenberg and freelance cameraman, Adil Cooke, who share the award.
