Media24 publications and journalists received a grand total of 10 awards out of the 14 open for submissions. Esmaré Weideman, CEO of Media24, herself a political journalist and editor for most of her life, was delighted at the announcement: “I couldn’t be more proud of our journalists and the quality of work that our news teams consistently produce.”

The Frewin, McCall and Joel Mervis awards honour newspaper excellence in advertising, printing and production, layout and typography as well as the balanced use of pictures and graphics. The awards are segmented into three newspaper categories: the Frewin Award category reviews urban dailies with a circulation of above 50 000; the McCall Award category reviews urban dailies with a circulation of below 50 000; and the Joel Mervis Award reviews urban weeklies irrespective of circulation.

Media24’s winners were:

- Frewin Award: Beeld.
- McCall Award: Volkblad.
- Joel Mervis Award: City Press.
- Investigave Journalism Award: Jonathan Erasmus, Mhlabunzima Memela and Rowan Philip of The Witness for their story Jay Singh Uncovered. They shared the award with Rob Rose, Stephan Hofstatter and Mzilikazi wa Afrika of the Sunday Times.
- Graphic Journalism Award: Jaco Grobbelaar of Graphics24 (City Press and Rapport) – his third consecutive win, while Graphics24 has also dominated in this category since its inception four years ago.
- Sports Photographs Award: Themba Makofane of Daily Sun for Split Decision.
- Presentation Award: Johnn-Grant Munro of Die Burger for his portfolio.
- Multiplatform Award: Pieter du Toit, Sonja Carstens and Celeste Louw of Beeld for How Oscar Pistorius changed Beeld forever – It Started With a Tweet.
- Young Journalist of the Year: Piet Matipa of Beeld.
- SA Story of the Year: Piet du Toit, Sonja Carstens and Celeste Louw of Beeld for How Oscar Pistorius changed Beeld forever – It Started With a Tweet.

In 2014, PDMSA received 683 submissions across 14 award categories.
