Private Ambulances

When lives are at stake, it’s expected that private ambulance services would be strictly regulated and monitored. But, with few control measures in place, that is often not the case. Even with only basic equipment, and staff with as little as four weeks training, it’s a cinch to get registered. And, it’s a lucrative business to be in. Carte Blanche investigates unscrupulous ambulance service providers who are quick to the scene.

Not My Debt

Many new property owners are shocked to find they are saddled with debt that previous owners racked up and didn’t pay to the local municipality. Unreasonable one might think, but a reality for paid-up property owners who’ve been disconnected from the grid for someone else’s historical debt. Are municipalities out for money they were just too inefficient to collect to begin with? Or are they within their legal rights to cut one off if one doesn’t cough up?

Ghetto Rainbow Nation

Into the heart of darkness - a block of flats like no other in Port Elizabeth - narratives that defy imagination from people whose life stories seem too brutal to be true. Among the sprawl of drugs, gangsterism, prison rituals and prostitution are the children, the elderly and the bystanders caught up in an underworld that the authorities simply have not been able take on.

Eco Estate Giraffe

Some of the nation’s most wealthy property owners live in the lap of luxury in the Meyersdal Eco Estate in Johannesburg where wildlife roam. But this week it became the site of a tragic accident when a double-storey mansion collapsed, killing a number of people. The same estate was in the news just three weeks ago when one of its giraffes died horrifically after hitting its head on a bridge over the highway while being transported. What went wrong? And, who is accountable for the management of animals on the estate?
