The SA Poultry Association (SAPA) and the South African egg committee will be continuing their association with the awards, making it 26 years in a row that they have been the event’s exclusive sponsors.

“These awards are not only highly anticipated by writers but are also significant in that they acknowledge the important work of the media in promoting South Africa’s food culture plus they strengthen the valuable relationships between South African egg producers and food journalists,” said Kevin Lovell, CEO of SAPA. “Food and health are topics of national importance and we believe that it’s in the interest of all South Africans that writers who demonstrate excellence and balanced reporting in these areas are acknowledged and encouraged.”

The awards will be open to food and health journalists in South Africa, whether writing for a magazine or newspaper.  There will be six categories of awards, the Galliova Food Writer of the Year (magazines) and the Galliova Food Writer of the Year (newspapers and weekly titles) each attracting prize money of R25 000 with four affiliated awards worth R15 000 each.

In recognition of the growing importance around health and nutrition issues, a new affiliated award, the Up and Coming Health Writer of the Year will be added for the first time. This award will be made along with the Health Writer of the Year, Up and Coming Food Writer of the Year and the Galliova Egg Champion.

Entrants will need to supply at least one piece of work that highlights eggs (not only as a recipe ingredient), with creativity, a passion for food excellence and an understanding of eggs and egg recipes among the selection criteria. Entries for these prestigious awards are now open and no submission fee is payable, thus providing journalists with a mouth-watering opportunity to make headlines of their own.  Entries will be judged by a panel of experts from the food, media and egg industries with the awards ceremony to be held on Friday, 16 October  in Cape Town.
