For over eight years, the uplifting weekly classical concerts at 13:00 on Fridays at the Auto and General Theatre on the Square have become food for the soul for so many members of the community. The concerts are now the only regular daytime music fixture in Gauteng.

The classical lunch hour concerts are a unique community project. The Auto amd General Theatre on the Square provides the infrastructure and a valued platform for the wealth of our classical music talent; a professionally equipped space for performances; work and promotional opportunities for new and established artists and ensembles; a comfortable, quality venue with easy access for regular patrons and older members of the community (as well as youngsters during holiday periods). It is regarded by scores of music lovers as the cultural highlight of the week in Gauteng – and musicians continue to request concert opportunities to showcase their work.

The classical lunch hour concerts have gone from strength to strength, particularly this last year. In addition to the theatre’s regular evening productions of drama, musical theatre, jazz and comedy, it has established a very happy and on-going association with members of the JPO, music schools and art centres. It has showcased string ensembles, opera divas and individual recitals by remarkable young or established musicians, who sing or play various musical instruments. In addition, the theatre has also proudly confirmed concerts in 2015, by many visiting international musicians to South Africa.

To keep arts and culture alive and to develop audiences, ticket prices remain R40 for all concerts. The price includes a concert programme and coffee and biscuits for all.

Tickets are unreserved and are available at the theatre from 12:30 on the day.
