With over R100 000 in cameras and prizes on offer as well as the opportunity to have a photo published in the Afrikaans daily its no wonder that entries kept pouring in for Beeld’s latest amateur photography competition.

The competition is held in conjunction with Canon and the World Wildlife Fund. The three categories are Nature, Holiday and Then and Now. Keeping in line with the international focus on environmental issues the Then and Now category aims to highlight the challenges of global warming and development.

“We are always looking for exciting opportunities for sponsors to collaborate on special projects and competitions,” says Gavin Rheeder, Marketing Communications Manager for Beeld “We have had incredible interest in this competition – with resulting high levels of awareness for the World Wildlife fund and Canon products.”

The winners from the respective categories will each receive a Canon EOS 400D digital camera to the value of R9000. The best photos will be published in Beeld every week of the competition while runner-ups can be viewed on www.beeld.com.

The head of the judging committee is Johan van Tonder, a well-known South African photo journalist whose photographs have been published throughout the world. Other distinguished judges include Dawid Roux, Beeld’s photo editor, Leon Botha the chief photographer at Beeld Pretoria and Collis Janse van Rensburg a seasoned Beeld journalist. “Like most of our competitions, the readers will make the final decision,” comments Rheeder. “We are expecting a record number of SMS entries this year.”

The competition closes this Friday, 25 January.
