From over 17 000 entries, Afrikaans daily newspaper Beeld, has announced the three winners of its annual amateur photographic competition.

The winners are: Hannes Mitchell in the Nature category, Herman Steyn for the Holiday.

Sponsored by Canon SA and in association with WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), entrants could choose between three categories Nature, Holiday and Then and Now in which to display their photographic talents.

“The competition was a huge success and Beeld was overwhelmed by the quality of the entries received. Out of the 17 000 entries over 4500 were posted on the beeld.com website and overall feedback has been extremely positive,” says Gavin Rheeder marketing communications manager for Beeld.

Winners from the respective categories will each receive a Canon EOS 400D digital camera to the value of R9000. In total, Canon sponsored in excess of R120 000 in photographic and printing equipment as prizes throughout the competition.
Judges were: Johan van Tonder (head of judging) a well-known South African photo journalist whose photographs have been published throughout the world; Dawid Roux, Beeld’s photo editor; Leon Botha chief photographer at Beeld Pretoria and Collis Janse van Rensburg and Manfred Zwecker, both seasoned Beeld journalists.
