“Media24 is at the forefront of the digital media revolution in South Africa and we’re diversifying
our business into new revenue streams like ecommerce and efashion, and job classifieds,” said
Media24 chief executive Esmaré Weideman. “We snap up more software developers than the
market can supply. And so we’ve taken to training the tech talent we need by partnering with
CapaCiti – the Cape Innovation and Technology Initiative’s answer to this skills shortage.”
Media24 has in its stable the largest digital media platforms and applications in South Africa with
over 100 software developers working across web, mobile and OpenSource. “The skills shortage
for young web development talent is well documented and through our new graduate
programme we aim to close that gap by not only providing IT training, but also preparing young
people for tech jobs at the coolest media company,” added Weideman.
Some of Media24’s brightest developers addressed the inaugural class of 16 graduates at the
launch of The Hub @ Media24.
“Applications are seeing explosive growth,” said Quinton Parker,
Spree.co.za’s principal solutions architect. “The Hub @ Media24 is here to help shape the future
of sustainable web development as our company becomes more and more software-driven.”
Young men and women in the field of web development in South Africa face a difficult labour
market transition. Media24’s investment in The Hub @ Media24 aims to not only close the skills
gap within the sector, but also attract the top young web development talent and equip them with
in-demand technical skills.
Weideman concluded that this is an exciting time for Media24 as the company executes its
digital strategy and builds out its tech future. “These fine young graduates will have an important
role to play and I can’t wait see them in action.”
