Moved by the plight of these children and their families, Jones decided she was going to make a donation. She told her team about the Red Cross’ call for assistance and before you knew it, a fundraising campaign was officially launched internally that would see the Private Higher Education Institution making a donation of over R20 000.
Sandise Sibanda, marketing manager of Milpark Education explains: “Family is important at Milpark Education, with many of us having young children, this call for assistance resonated with us. So we jumped at the opportunity to assist. What started off as a donation box soon became an initiative that saw the various departments hosting activities and setting challenges for each other to raise more money. Our CEO, Julian van der Westhuizen, then committed to matching the money raised by staff, and we are proud to be handing over a donation of a sizeable amount today.”
The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital’s paediatric ICU is the largest for children in Africa. The new facility, scheduled for completion in 2017, will be able to accommodate 39 bed spaces and will include a 10-bed High Care Neonatal Unit and eight isolation cubicles.
