Small businesses continue to prove themselves as agile and determined to succeed, but there is a role for big business to play in assisting small, entrepreneur-run businesses thrive and reach their best potential, says Pick n Pay.

Pick n Pay has run its Enterprise and Supplier Development Programme, a specialised programme to help support and grow small and medium enterprises. As part of its small business strategy, Pick n Pay nurtures 'infant' companies through the initial growth and retail journey, after which they continue to closely follow their development. This is to ensure a substantial degree of success on all levels.

Founder and owner of small business Nunuki Nána Lloyd says that joining the programme in 2019 'felt fitting'. "My new company provides skin care products to help a mother protect and improve the well-being of her children — much like Pick n Pay helps to 'raise' younger and smaller companies," says Lloyd.

Mishinga Seyuba Kombo, head of Pick n Pay's enterprise and supplier development programme, says, "It has always been our commitment to support small business products. Our team is working closely with Nunuki to help nurture and grow the business through our stores."

Nána started Nunuki in 2018 with the dream of helping mothers easily find unique skincare products specifically created to protect the sensitive skin of their children. "I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children through innovative products that share stories of kindness and celebrating each other's differences," Lloyd says.

"I was blessed to be granted the opportunity to have my own children and be their mother and so it dawned on me that we were now fully responsible for human beings who relied on us for everything. I came to realise that as my children were getting older, celebrating their life's achievements meant more than celebrating my own," concludes Lloyd.

The Nunuki skincare range is currently available in 40 Pick n Pay stores countrywide and the duo is working to roll out to more in due course.
