According to TGRC, glass is a superstar when it comes to recycling. Glass recycling helps save energy, reduces carbon emissions and is endlessly recyclable.

TGRC is all about glass packaging — the bottles and jars you use for drinks, food and cosmetics. Whether it's clear, green or brown glass, it's all recyclable.

Not all glass can be recycled the same way. When it comes to recycling, say no to window glass, crystal drinking glasses and light bulbs. These don't play well with the packaging glass recycling process, so separate and dispose of them properly to keep the recycling flow smooth and maintain the purity of glass packaging.

TGRC gives the details on sorting your glass and assisting you with the information you need to start a recycling business or just support a local school's glass recycling efforts.

Glass that can be recycled in South Africa is packaging glass (clear, green, and brown glass varieties), such as bottles and jars for:
  • beverages
  • food, and
  • cosmetics.

Glass that cannot be recycled with packaging glass in South Africa include:
  • windowpanes and windshield glass
  • mirrors
  • crystal drinking glasses
  • glass cookware and ovenware, and
  • light bulbs.

TGRC says it is important to separate these types of glass and dispose of them correctly to avoid contaminating the recycling process and ensure the purity of recycled glass packaging.

TGRC is all about creating a greener, more sustainable South Africa, and believes that even the smallest recycling efforts can make a big difference.
