SADAG says the free online Support Group Training runs over six weeks, on Wednesdays from 10:00 to 11:00.

"Thirty years ago, I started SADAG as a small Support Group because I knew firsthand how powerful it is to talk to someone who understands — and today, Support Groups remain one of the most effective ways to bring hope, healing and help to so many more people across South Africa," says Zane Wilson, SADAG Founder.

Support Groups provide a safe, confidential space for people to connect, foster community, share challenges, troubleshoot coping skills, offer empathetic understanding and create a non-judgmental space for people with shared experiences to come together; to feel less alone, more seen, heard and understood, adds the organisation.

The purpose of the training is not only to create awareness about Support Groups and the benefits of joining a Support Group, but also to launch more Support Groups around the country in communities that need help the most and provide aftercare to those in need of extra support after a diagnosis or treatment, says SADAG.

According to SADAG, the free six-part Support Group Leader online training covers:

  • what a Support Group is and who should join or start a Support Group
  • Mental Health 101 and training to become a volunteer Support Group Leader, and
  • preparing and launching your own Support Group.

Support Group Leader, Sanele Vilakazi, says, "Mental Health struggles can be isolating. Support Groups connect you with others who understand what you're going through, which helps reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation."

If you are passionate about Mental Health and making a difference in your community, becoming a SADAG Support Group Leader might be the perfect role for you. SADAG says it is looking for individuals who have personal experience living with a Mental Health issue or supporting a loved one — people who understand the value of connection and shared experiences.

SADAG concludes that whether you're hoping to start a Group at your local clinic, hospital, church, or community centre, or want to bring people together online who've faced similar Mental Health challenges, SADAG will guide and support you every step of the way.
