With many of these pets facing Christmas on their own, the team hopes to bring a little extra warmth and joy to each one. The campaign aims at introducing homeless pets up for adoption to members of the public and to encourage people to sponsor them to show them some extra love over the festive season, says the NPO.

"Many of the animals in our care have never had a real Christmas," says Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising and Communications Executive at Khayelitsha. "While Christmas is typically a happy, family-filled day, it's always bittersweet knowing our shelter pets are spending it without one. This year, we want to make the day a little brighter for them. By sponsoring a shelter pet, members of the public can help give them a Christmas experience, and our team and volunteers will make sure each animal feels special," says du Plessis.

The NPO says that there are a variety of sponsoring options including:

  • R25: A cuddle and a treat.
  • R50: Get rid of nasty fleas and ticks.
  • R85: A vaccination to stay healthy.
  • R165: Food for one week.
  • R500: Sponsor me for a month.
  • R650: Sterilise your pet.
  • R1 000: All the above.

“The dogs and cats up for adoption have been at our clinic’s shelter facility for weeks or even months,” says du Plessis.

People can choose their special pet by visiting the official website. Individuals are encouraged to sponsor a pet to have a "Charismas experience" by making a donation to Mdzanada Animal Clinic.
