Considering it’s usually a younger demographic that drives popular culture, Leigh Andrews interviews Hip2B² to find out how they’re making maths and science 'hip' and 'cool' to the trendy youth market. Kerryn Le Cordeur sits down with the new kids on the block – Twisted Toast – and Nikita Gomes Achadinha reports back on Student Village’s Marketing to the Youth conference.

Marie Straub investigates how brands have the power to help reach the youth about social issues with the example of Levi's Red Campaign. Tarryn Giebelmann looks into how social media is becoming the go-to medium for up-and-coming musicians trying to break into the popular scene and Tessa Reed investigates the extent to which big brands like Vodacom are latching on to pop culture in an attempt to build their brands.

Keep an eye out for this month’s Behind the Ad where we ‘Redds it up’ and browse through our Creative Space section, where we feature some more awesome new artists. Be sure to check out our collaboration with the fourth year BTech students at UJ’s FADA on our blog. Each of them designed their own unique, interactive version of COUP.

Of course, we have not forgotten about our entertainment addicts – get your monthly fix of music, film, book, and live reviews!

Lastly, May was a sad month for South Africans. Upon being informed of Anton Hammerl’s passing, COUP decided to publish a tribute to him in our June issue. We approached certain of his colleagues to see if any of them wanted to share a few thoughts or sentiments and when we received Stuart Hess’ tribute to him, we knew that we would publish it in its entirety, with no frills, and no fuss – the words said more than we ever could. Read it here.
