Opening on 25 September 1985, the centre was a small 45 000 square metre regional shopping centre with just five anchor stores: Checkers, Dion, Edgars, Woolworths and Ster-Kinekor. Today, the centre spans 109 000 square metres and hosts 184 stores.
It was the second 'gate”' in Johannesburg to open its doors after Eastgate and what makes Westgate an ideal centre to shop at is its simple design and layout. Though it is a two-level centre, almost 80% of the shops are located on the upper level.
Westgate affords shoppers in Johannesburg the perfect place when comparing prices in the grocery department and is the only shopping centre that has a Checkers, a Checkers Hyper store and a Pick n Pay as part of the vast array of anchor tenants.
Its vast size along with its spread of stores means it plays host to shoppers from all over the region. There are only two centres in the great city of Johannesburg that are bigger – Sandton City and Eastgate.
