The digital campaign marks the 10th anniversary of the Hairdressers Against AIDS programme, which have involved 1.5-million hairdressers in 35 countries.

Four training videos, focusing on real-life situations, have been developed for use in hair salons around the world. Highlighting the power of conversations and peer-education, the videos will be used as educational tools for hairdressers around the world who participate in the Hairdressers Against AIDS programme. Additionally, an educational quiz focused on AIDS prevention knowledge is available online, allowing both hairdressers and the general public to evaluate their personal knowledge about HIV.

Through these interactive tools, Hairdressers Against AIDS aims to support the hairdressing profession in alerting the public to the risks of HIV, while also working to fight against the negative behaviour and stigmas associated with the disease. In addition to providing professional services, a hairdresser often acts as a confidant, offering a listening ear to salon clients. Once a relationship of trust is formed, the hairdresser can play a role in informing and educating clients about social issues.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the L’Oréal Hairdressers Against AIDS (HAA) initiative and further educate local hairdressers on how they can help tackle AIDS in their communities, L’Oréal South Africa invited stylists from across the country to attend its glamorous Red Ribbon Rendezvous.

The issue of AIDS and the difference hairdressers can make in fighting the pandemic will be addressed by guest speakers Bertrand De Laleu, L’Oréal South Africa managing director, and Jane MacLaren-Taylor, general manager of L’Oréal South Africa’s Professional Products Division. Chantelle Lavender, a passionate and inspiring motivational speaker, will share insights from her personal journey of how HIV changed her life when her mother passed away from AIDS.

The event was held at Movida in Johannesburg on 30 November, and culminated in a countdown at midnight to 1 December – World AIDS Day.
