2013 marks the 11
th Fun Walk, in aid of deaf children. All proceeds will go towards the Carel du Toit Centre, which is nationally considered as the leading educational institution for deaf children.
At this extraordinary Centre, deaf children are taught to communicate with speech. If a child is diagnosed with deafness early enough and fitted with the correct hearing aid, they can learn to speak normally, attend a mainstream school and reach their full potential. Children who are diagnosed with deafness too late are unable to catch up on developmental delays. These children will stay outsiders to the community due to their lack of speech and language, being unable to express themselves sufficiently.
Carel du Toit is the only centre in the country that accommodates deaf children from birth. The Centre also runs a support programme for parents of deaf children. This programme can be attended from the moment the child is diagnosed with a hearing disability, regardless of age.
One's walking can help deaf children talk and lead a normal life. Entry fees are R40 (adults), R30 (children under 12) and R30 (dogs). The first 500 entrants qualify for a goodie bag.
