Nota’s act of feeding the wheelchair-bound man by hand inspired a flurry of positive feedback from members of the public and Wimpy has decided to reward him for his kind gesture.

Tertius Gous, who was at Wimpy Canal Walk at the time, explained in a post on Lead SA’s Facebook page that the disabled man was in an electric wheelchair and had trouble communicating that he wanted ice-cream. Once Nota understood the man’s request, he did not hesitate to assist.

In Gous’ own words: “I sat there watching this and thought, ‘How is this man ever going to manage to eat his ice cream?” Then one of the waiters went and sat down with the man and started feeding him the ice cream. You could see that the waiter was not doing it because he was told to do it. You could see the compassion and love in his face. I sat there, totally amazed. After the man had finished his ice cream, he gave the waiter a big long hug. I have never seen anything like this at any restaurant.”

Marius Koen, manager of Wimpy Canal Walk, replied on the Facebook post after several Facebook users commended Nota for his kindness: “Vincent is indeed a star. The disabled gentleman is a regular at both our branches in Canal Walk and our staff always try to make his visit as comfortable as possible. We will pass all these comments on to Vincent. We appreciate him very much.”

Nota was honoured for showing what good service should be, Wimpy rewarded his actions with a shopping voucher. Wimpy senior officials and representatives from the Cape Town Association for the Physically Disabled, to whom Wimpy will be making a generous donation attended the event.

After all, Wimpy always strives to go the extra mile so people can truly enjoy every moment – and every scoop of ice-cream.
