Valentine’s Day is one of South Africa’s favourite holidays, and the residents of the country certainly aren’t afraid to show it! According to a 2019 survey by Mastercard, “sentimental spending in South Africa has grown by 66% [from] 2016 [to 2018] — well above the global average of 3%”.

Interestingly enough, despite the big bucks South Africans are shelling out for V-Day, the study found that only 3% of the holiday purchases were made online — a number we’ll surely see increase in the coming years.

And as for the top South African search queries related to the day of love, 2019’s most searched phrases were:
  1. Valentine’s Day 2019
  2. Valentine’s specials 2019
  3. Happy Valentine’s Day pics
  4. Happy Valentine’s Day GIF
  5. Valentine’s Day movie
