Nedbank Wealth tasked its internal communications partner agency, icandi CQ, to create a cybercrime awareness campaign that would engage and educate employees.
Instead of going the traditional route, icandi CQ drew on the 'edutainment' model of gamification to create CYBERSAFE – an interactive, online game for employees to play, compete, and learn about cybercrime and Nedbank’s response processes while earning points and winning prizes.
CYBERSAFE invites players to beat the clock by answering a series of weekly questions, with tips provided to assist players to move on to the next level. As with gamification, competition is a key element. The board encouraged players to view and move up the ladder and finish in the Top 10 to claim digital prizes.
icandi CQ wanted employees to connect with the campaign on a personal level, so they devised a way to make employees see that protecting their professional information was no different to protecting their personal information.
The campaign launch went out of its way to make cybercrime personal by placing fake digital devices (life-like cellphones, laptops, etc.), in high-traffic areas to highlight how easy it is to leave digital information open to fraud. The messaging also encouraged staff to go online to 'play the game, crack the code, and open the CYBERSAFE'.
Nedbank Wealth and icandi CQ hope to prove that South Africa does have the people to fight cybercrime; it’s just not the traditional professionals that are usually thought of.
