Today is the 27th of April. Around the world, it's just another Thursday, but in South Africa it is Freedom Day!

What exactly are we celebrating and why should marketers care?

media update's Alrika Möller explains why marketers should take note of this important public holiday:

Let’s start with the basics …

Freedom Day celebrates South Africa’s first non-racial democratic election that happened 29 years ago in 1994.

This election marked the end of years of segregation and the establishment of the new democratic government in South Africa.

So why should marketers care?

As marketers, you have a social responsibility to acknowledge the history of your country and those affected by it.

By creating marketing campaigns that highlight Freedom Day, you can educate those that are unaware of the significance, as well as honour those that fought for South Africa’s democracy.

South Africa has come a long way, and it is important for brands to celebrate that in their marketing in order to promote patriotism and a sense of community in our country.

If you highlight Freedom Day through marketing, you are looking at our past to celebrate a hopeful future
