Gone4Good, which kicked off on Saturday, 1 July and wrapped up on Sunday, 30 July, unfolded across three routes — two within Cape Town and one in Johannesburg. Unlike traditional races, Gone4Good had no starting line, finish banner or overexcited MCs cheering participants on, says the duo.
The routes were simply suggestions and runners were encouraged to make the experience their own — there were even prizes up for grabs for participants who completed their route the most times throughout the month. At its core, the initiative is all about encouraging people to get out and explore while coming together to support a common cause, the duo adds.
The lineup included:
- the Gone4Good Classic spanning 17.7km
- the Gone4Good Lite covering 10.8km, and
- the formidable Gone4Good JHB stretching 18.9km.
According to the race, 1 964 participants recorded a total of 7 493km on Strava and the cause resonated with almost 15 000 people online. But the duo adds that Gone4Good's crowning achievement is the R108 685 it raised for:
- Protect the West Coast
- Sentinel Ocean Alliance
- Dream Higher, and
- the African Pangolin Working Group.
According to the partnership, these organisations are doing meaningful work to protect the South African environment and the creatures that call it home.
The event coincided with Jack Black's Pint for a Purpose initiative in June and July, where proceeds from pints sold at Jack Black Taproom went directly to Sentinel Ocean Alliance.
The duo concludes that participants who completed the Gone4Good run and donated to any one of the charities also received a complementary Jack Black beer and a limited edition Gone4Good / Jack Black beer mug.
