Lawyers for the Arts South Africa (LASA), in partnership with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), has hosted the 2025 Creative Economy and IP Protection Youth Workshop on Thursday, 20 November, at the NYDA Offices in Sunninghill.
Under the theme Fueling Youth Creativity and Legal Empowerment, this one-day workshop aims to empower 120 young creatives, including students and youth living with disabilities, to understand the business and legal dimensions of the creative economy, says the NPO.
The workshop aims to bring together legal experts, industry professionals and creative entrepreneurs to help young South Africans build sustainable, protected and thriving creative careers, adds the NPO.
Empowering Creative Youth Through Legal Literacy
Participants gain hands-on access to legal and industry experts through interactive workshops, panel discussions and a Pop-Up Law Clinic offering free legal consultations on contracts, intellectual property and artist rights, says the NPO.
Key focus areas include:
- Intellectual Property (IP) rights and protection
- creative entrepreneurship and innovation
- brand visibility and market positioning for artists
- legal literacy for sustainable careers, and
- funding opportunities and access for youth creatives.
Building a Legally Empowered Creative Generation.
"Too many young South African creatives enter the industry unaware of their rights or the legal tools available to protect their work. This workshop is about changing that narrative — empowering our youth to not only dream big but to protect and own their creativity," says Lerato Moloi, Founder and CEO of Lawyers for the Arts South Africa (LASA).
A Legacy of Collaboration and Impact
LASA continues its aim to build strong partnerships with organisations advancing South Africa's creative economy. Its current and past partners include:
- Bowmans and Adams & Adams — Contracts and IP Workshops.
- McDonald's South Africa — Financial and Estate Planning for Creatives.
- Goethe-Institut — IP Commercialisation Training.
- FAME Week Africa — Associate Legal Partner (third consecutive year in 2025).
- The Law Society of South Africa — National Legal Volunteer Network.
These collaborations aim to demonstrate LASA's mission to bridge the gap between the legal, creative and business sectors, fostering a stronger and more informed creative community, concludes the NPO.
