According to Dave Duarte, internet and mobile marketing specialist, South Africa is currently sixth in the world (in between India and the US) in terms of the number of people accessing the mobile web. There are more cell phones in South Africa than TVs; telephones; radios; and taxis combined, and with over 40-million active SIM cards, Duarte believes South Africa truly is a mobile society.

Duarte directs the Mobile Marketing course at the University of Cape Town (UCT) Graduate School of Business this July. The three-day programme (running from 29 to 31 July) will give insights into the fields of Mobile Marketing; Information Systems; Telecommunications; Experiential Marketing; and learning processes.

Speaking at the programme will be Chris Rolfe, CEO of Mobilitrix – a cutting edge mobile solution provider offering a selection of mobile products that makes it easy for companies, brands and marketers to engage directly with their key stakeholders via their phones. Rolfe will offer insights into the ease-of-use of mobile as a business tool that can be used across all business divisions to streamline business functions, the benefits of engaging via the mobile platform, the vast reach of mobile and the ease of entry into the mobile realm.

Rolfe will also explore the key role of simplicity in the universalising of mobile and will expose the true potential of USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data – the *121* format most commonly used to top up pre-paid airtime), as potentially the most cost-effective means of direct one-to-one interaction with consumers with the scope for the greatest reach.
