Yesterday, the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) announced the appointment of Nkwenkwe Nkomo as chairperson. Nkomo is also group chairperson of FCB South Africa, the largest marketing communication group in the country, and deputy chairperson of the 2010 national communication partnership. The ASA is an independent body set up to monitor and regulate advertising in the public interest. It is done through a system of self-regulation, while the association works closely with government, statutory bodies, consumer organisations and the industry. It aims to make sure that advertising content meets the requirements of the Code of Advertising Practice.
