Locally commissioned by Urban Brew Studios, Pop Up Party airs on channel 301 on DStv every Saturday and Sunday at 16:30.

The African-flavoured dance party has already popped up on screens across Africa and fans of the new show will be able to watch the special Dbn Nyts episode on Sunday, 4 September.

After exploding onto the South African music scene with their chart-topping super hit Shumaya, Dbn Nyts, who are originally from Durban, consists of Kabelo Phekile, Lwazi Yokana, Wonder Shabalala, Cebo Ngcobo and Samkelo Maphumulo. The group pushed hard to get where they are now and after originally starting out as a dance group back in 2010, they transitioned and soon became a popular phenomenon amongst their fans for doing their famous 'shilolo’ dance. Their chart topping hit also bagged them a couple of South African Music Awards in 2016 for Best Collaboration, Highest Radio Airplay of the Year and Highest Radio Airplay Composers’ Award.

“When Cartoon Network reached out we were very excited to be a part of the project. To us, working with Cartoon Network means working with an international and well established brand and we could not wait to get started on the project,” says Ngcobo. “What surprised us most was the fact that this international channel was producing a local show and investing in South African talent. We were honoured to hear that they wanted Dbn Nyts to be a part of this local production and of course we gladly accepted this great opportunity.”

The special episode, which sees the Dbn Nyts surprising the Pop Up Party crew, was shot at the Chaf Pozi restaurant situated right next to the Orlando Towers in Soweto.

“The kids were a lot of fun to work with. They each have their own personalities that bring something unique to the show, but they all have something in common - the love of dancing,” says Maphulumo. “They brought passion and creativity to the set and that made working with them pretty special.”

“We chose the Dbn Nyts as guest stars for the show, because we wanted to add to the ‘surprise’ element that defines ‘Pop up Party’, while offering viewers an amazing and unexpected performance thanks to this extremely talented group, which has had tremendous success,” comments Ariane Suveg, programming & acquisitions manager for Turner Kids’ channels in Africa. “We wanted to create a real, spontaneous exchange between the kids, the professionals and also the public, which all joined in for a ‘true moment of fun’. Our collaboration with the Dbn Nyts was fantastic and the fun has only just begun.”
