“It’s an unusual, funny and clever murder mystery filled with unexpected twists and turns. It will keep you on the edge of your seat, whilst laughing uncontrollably,” says Lizz Meiring, who plays Bonnie van der Byl.

Hoener Met Die Rooi Skoene is said to be magical and original, with a cast of unique characters, suited for the film’s setting of Klaarstroom, hidden in the heart of the Klein Karoo.

Bonnie is a receptionist at the internationally acclaimed De Waal Theatre Group. Whilst chatting away on the phone, her boss, the successful but unpopular Du Toit de Waal (Deon Lotz), is murdered.

Bonnie discovers him with a dagger in his back, lying on the desk behind her. She phones the police, gets a closer look at the body, and inspects the situation. Bonnie collapses and is later woken by the flashlight of Constable Mickey Mentz (André Weideman), to discover that the body is nowhere to be seen.

The murder mystery is filled with unexpected moments of laughter, twists and turns, orchestrated by Bonnie, her parrot Napoleon, and the moody inspector, Captain Hendrik Greyling (Louw Venter).

“The movie is based on an old French theatre production. And the reasoning behind the name is revealed in the first few minutes of the story.  All to the amusement of Constable Mentz,” says Roets.

Roets adds, “I didn’t make this movie to teach people serious life lessons. There is enough nonsense going on around us. I just want to offer viewers the opportunity to come, sit back, relax and enjoy. And laugh out loud. But that being said, it is not a typical slapstick comedy with people throwing each other with pies. And, of course, the boss that re-appears when you least expect him.”

Hoener Met Die Rooi Skoene boasts a great cast, including guest appearances by Anton Goosen, Soli Philander, Goitsemang Lehbye and Leon Ecroignard. The film will be released nationwide on Friday, 27 January 2017, distributed by Ster Kinekor Entertainment.
