ELLE magazine, in partnership with LISOF, is offering a young talented person the opportunity to realise their dream through a R130 000 bursary, to study towards a three-year diploma or degree in fashion.
The competition is open to South African citizens who have successfully matriculated or are currently in Grade 12 and manage to pass at the end of 2008. To enter, the aspiring designers have to submit two sketches, one under the category of
Urban Couture and the other under
Urban Street along with a 200-word motivation on each design. The entrants should also write (no more than 200 words) on how they would benefit from winning the bursary.
ELLE has been investing in the development of new South African talent for the past 10 years through bursaries, and the
ELLE New Talent Awards, which assist recently qualified designers launch their own labels.
“As leaders in the fashion and beauty industry, we want to cultivate the importance of strong foundations through study and mentorship amongst our young people,” says
ELLE’s editor, Jackie Burger. “Unfortunately talent alone is not enough in this industry, hard work and education are vital.”
Founder and Director of LISOF, Shana Rosenthal concurs, “Today it’s about the designer and their distinctive expression – firmly located within the dynamics and pressures of the retail floor.”
