Caxton prides itself in delivering a local newspaper that is informative and relevant to its readers. Since it’s humble beginnings in 1978, the Randburg Sun has grown to the point where it was being delivered to more than 60 000 households. As the area covered by the Sun has grown and more people have moved into the area, a clear distinction between people living in the North and South of Randburg’s distribution area has become evident.

Randburg Sun North has a slightly higher percentage of home owners, and a greater number of people working on the maintenance of their homes and gardens than its southern neighbour. Most residents, a full 63 percent, are between the ages of 25 and 44, and have children of a school-going age. Randburg North is largely populated by white, English-speaking households, with only 20 percent of households conversing in a language other than English.

According to the Living Standards Measure (LSM), residents of Randburg North are wealthier than those of the South, with just over two-thirds of the population in the top three tiers (in a rank of one to ten), and 72 percent of residents earning R12 000 per month, or more.

With the growing numbers of townhouse complexes in the North, it’s unsurprising that a large number of residents are spending more money on furniture, large electrical appliances and items for the home. PVR has really caught on in the North, and more than 50 percent of residents are likely to have a computer for personal use in the home.

More than a third of residents look to their local paper for information on special events and entertainment, and for general household services such as electricians and plumbers. Residents also look to the Randburg Sun for information on health and fitness, including medical practitioners and for updates on the schools in their area. The shopping centres favoured by residents are Northgate Mall, Cresta and Fourways Mall.

It is the clear differences between the two areas that lead Caxton to split the Randburg Sun into two different papers, to assure that readers receive a newspaper that is relevant and exclusively local.
