AKA’s Best International Act (Africa) nomination comes after winning Coolest Local Music Star for the second consecutive year at the reputable Sunday Times Generation Next Awards; making him the Most Important Player in the South African music scene as seen by the youth.

2016 saw AKA release two singles - One Time and Dream Works - that went triple platinum. The World is Yours was the number one song on all South African radio for nine consecutive weeks.

Here are some of the highlights achieved by AKA in the past two years:

  • Received three consecutive BET Award nominations in the category Best International Act (Africa);
  • The only African musician to perform at the BET Experience main stage in Los Angeles in 2016;
  • Coolest Local Music Star at the Sunday Times Generation Next Awards for two consecutive years; 
  • The first South African English rapping artist to go platinum and double platinum;
  • The first South African musician to gain 1 million Twitter followers;
  • The first person in Africa to receive the Twitter Camera App;
  • The first South African artist on Tim Westwood’s show in the United Kingdom;
  • First performance of single, One Time, trended worldwide and was the most watched episode of Live Amp;
  • Release of single, Dreamwork featuring Yanga, trended for over 24 hours and had internationally acclaimed artist, Snoop Dogg, rap to it;
  • The only African based artist to feature in the BBC Radio 1Xtra’s 'Hot for 2016' artist's list, which previously predicted successes such as Drake and Sam Smith;
  • Received five Best African Act nominations in 2015; and
  • Has headlined numerous events across the African continent in countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and Mozambique just to mention a few; as well as in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada.
