Participants will be able to create a customised app schedule featuring artists, stages, and things to do in the places and spaces at
#RTD2017. A detailed festival map means participants will know where to go to eat, sleep, and shower. Participants can look out for two additional stages and many spaces that are set to be launched.
#RTD2017 to honour Ray Phiri
A highlight of the festival is the tribute to Ray Phiri, which takes place on Saturday, 6 October on the main stage at 13:15. Phiri was on the initial festival line-up but passed away in July. In recognition of his contribution to South African music and the industry as a whole,
#RTD2017 will honour his memory with a tribute with musical direction by Bokani Dyer.
Dyer is an award-winning pianist, composer, and producer and will be joined by some of South Africa's musicians. The six-piece includes Bonj Mpaza, Lucas Khumalo, Jaco Maria, Reza Khota, and Anthon Mannel.
In assembling the line-up of musicians, Dyer aimed to get a balance between younger and older musicians. "My approach to the show will be to do minimal modernising and arrangement to the pieces that we’ve chosen from Ray’s incredible repertoire," adds Dyer.
"The big lesson that I learned from working with Ray was his belief in the integrity of the song. He would describe his songs to me as conversations, with the different instruments talking to, and answering, each other. He felt strongly that any interference in that should be kept to a minimum," says Dreyer.
Dreyer adds, "He also believed that if a song had stood the test of time and was beloved of audiences, why change it too much? It is important that I honour that by paying a lot of attention to what is already there in the songs – and there is so, so much – while taking a little leeway for a more contemporary audience."
