Generations, SABC1’s highly popular, most glamorous, longest-running locally-produced soap, broke new ground when it first went on air on 4 February, 1994.

SABC1 recently took its loyal viewers on a nostalgic journey down memory lane by re-screening the very first episode of Generations on local television on Wednesday, 4 February 2009 at 20:30.

The historic episode opened with the youthful Rebecca Malope singing at the funeral of Mama Moroka. Viewers marveled at the sight of legendary actors and actresses such as David Phetoe; Sello Maake ka Ncube; Arthur Molepo; Vinolia Mashego; Tina Jaxa–Billie; Mxolisi Hulana; and Charmaine Mtinta, amongst others, going through their creative paces. The late Mama Daphne Hlomuka featured as Rosy in this invaluable piece of television antique. The title music, Ledimo, composed by one of the most celebrated musicians locally and internationally, Jonas Gwangwa, warmed the heart as it re-kindled memories gone by.

A special treat in the form of a one-hour special episode follows on Thursday, 26 February at 20:30. Connie Ferguson will take viewers on a special journey weaving the magic of Generations down the years. The special will look at the lives and roles of cast and crew who have been part of this unfolding television history. Interviews will be conducted with the likes of Mfundi Vundla, and men and women whose contribution made Generations the success it has been over the years. Behind-the-scenes and inserts from past episodes will form part of this highly entertaining special.
