FRIED BARRY recently had its world premiere at the CINEQUEST Film and Creativity Festival in San Jose, California. The film was well-received and has earned multiple reviews from the local Californian press.

The Cinequest Film Festival has been voted as the Best Film Festival by USA Today. FRIED BARRY represented South Africa, as well as Africa, at the festival as it was the only African-made feature film in 2020's programme.

The film follows the tale of a heroin addict whose body is hijacked by an alien visitor. It marks the feature film directing debut of celebrated music video director Ryan Kruger.

The film comprises a cast of local and international actors, including:
  • Hakeem Kae-Kazim (Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Black Sails),
  • Sean Cameron Michael (MacGyver, 24), and
  • Chanelle De Jager (The Widow, Outlander).
FRIED BARRY is the feature-length adaptation of the award-winning eponymous short film. The short has built up a cult following and has gained thousands of views across platforms, and has seen multiple examples of FRIED BARRY fan art.

Forgoing a traditional script, the film was mostly improvised from an outline that Kruger wrote in three days. In his first major role, Gary Green gives the performance as the title character with the makings of a future horror icon.

"FRIED BARRY is a first for South Africa," concludes director, Ryan Kruger, "It's encouraging to see such great excitement for a film that is so different from the rest of South African cinema."
