TEARS Animal Rescue has announced that it is on a mission to raise funds to purchase 13 tonnes of pet food — six tonnes for cats and seven tonnes for dogs — to sustain the TEARS Feed Hungry Pets Programme for the next six months.
TEARS says that in the low-income communities it serves, many families are facing severe financial hardship. They love their pets dearly, but when the cupboards are bare and the bills keep mounting, feeding their animals becomes an overwhelming challenge. For some, the heartbreaking reality is having to surrender their beloved companions to shelters — not because they want to, but because they simply can't afford to keep them fed.
But TEARS says it believes there's a better way.
The Solution: The TEARS Feed Hungry Pets Programme
The programme supports pet owners in crisis by providing supplemental pet food — keeping animals at home, out of shelters and in the arms of the people who love them most, says the organisation.
In honour of Mandela Day, TEARS says it is asking for help to raise enough funds to purchase six tonnes of cat food and seven tonnes of dog food. That's 13 tonnes to support hundreds of animals and families for six months.
Individuals can partake by donating here or by sharing the campaign with friends, family and networks, adds the organisation.
What Donation Supports
TEARS says that when people donate to the '6'n'7' Project, they're doing far more than filling food bowls — they're helping to keep families together and animals out of shelters. Support ensures a consistent supply of nutritious dog and cat food is delivered to struggling pet owners, allowing them to care for their animals during difficult times.
By supporting pet retention initiatives, donations help prevent unnecessary surrenders. Animals stay in the loving homes they know, surrounded by the people who cherish them. This not only spares animals the trauma of losing their families but also reduces the burden on already overwhelmed shelters, says the organisation.
Contributing also brings emotional and financial relief to pet owners who simply want to do right by their animals. It's a gift of hope, comfort and stability during times of crisis. Most importantly, donations strengthen TEARS' compassion-led approach to community welfare — where no one is left behind, and every animal matters.
TEARS concludes, be part of something truly meaningful. Help us fill hungry bowls, keep families together and bring joy and security to the voiceless animals who depend on us.
