Radio 786 began broadcasting on 1 September 1995 for three hours a day. The station was officially launched on 25 September in the same year. From then, it broadcasted a full day’s (19 to 20 hours) programme on the 100.4 FM frequency to the greater metropole area in the Western Cape.

Radio 786 primarily serves the broadcasting needs of the Muslim community. A wide variety of programmes are of a religious; theological; and devotional nature. The call to the five daily prayers; religious education; melodious recitation of the Qur’an; theological debates; Arabic literacy; and the coverage of events in the Muslim community are the salient features of these programmes.

The station’s objectives and ethos encompass: serving the interests of Muslims and the wider community in general; promoting a socially conscious and responsible community; promoting self reliance through gaining knowledge; strengthening family values and morals; providing knowledge and information, at the same time providing a platform to make informed decisions; providing listeners with the opportunity to partake in issues which are of concern to them and to the community at large; to keep abreast of news, current affairs, both local and global, on issues affecting all people and spheres of society; encouraging the public to be vocal about their issues and to see concerns from a different perspective; and providing the oppressed and marginalised with a voice. Radio 786’s approach is to serve the educational; informational; and cultural needs of the community.
