The next series of Supersterre, the hit reality show featuring South Africa’s future singing talents, will start next month on SABC2 on Friday, 7 September.
The season’s auditions launched in April this year at the KKNK National Arts Festival in Oudtshoorn. After this, the Supersterre team visited Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal, the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and North-West provinces to pick out the talents that will compete on the show. Thousands auditioned to be part of the show, with more than 5 000 entries received by the end of the tour. Although not everyone made it into Supersterre, Patricia Lewis and Shaun Tait, the winner of the last show, performed on-stage after each audition event to cheer them up.
The top 150 entrants were then flown to the second round of auditions in Johannesburg. From these 150 hopefuls, the final ten contestants were chosen, ranging from 15 to 27 years old. Three contestants are from the Western Cape, three from Gauteng, one from the Eastern Cape, one from KZN, one from North-West and one from Upington.
The winner of the show will not only receive the Supersterre trophy, but also a recording contract from Sony BMG and R100 000.
Coaches this season include: Karen Zoid; Jennifer Jones; Jannie Moolman; Nicholis Louw; and Dozi. Each coach shapes their contestant over the thirteen-week show, and the celebrity with the winning contestant will win R250 000. Judging the season are the following celebrities: Theuns Jordaan as head judge; Charlene Surtie-Richards; Niekie van der Berg; and a guest judge every episode. Brandon October and Patricia Lewis also return as presenters.
Supersterre has also allowed contestants from previous shows a second chance, as one eliminated contestant will return to the last show through audience votes. Either the overall Supersterre trophy will be won, or the title of Super Nova.
The Supersterre Extravaganza Finale Event will be held at Carnival City, where various guest artists will also perform.
Supersterre was a success in its first season, averaging 1.5 million viewers every week.
The thirteen-part show begins on Friday, 7 September on SABC2 at 19:30. The finale will take place on Friday, 30 November.
