My Shocking Story 5
Giant Head (TX: Thursday, 1 April 2010 at 21:00)
Sain Mumtaz is a young man (18) living outside Lahore in Pakistan, who has the most extraordinary skull/head. He has not seen a doctor since he was a boy, and was told: It’s Proteus Syndrome, and there’s nothing to be done to help you. Sain believes he has been cursed by god, and that there is nothing for him in life, but the begging he does everyday, on the main road to Lahore.
Proteus may have been the correct diagnosis for Sain’s condition – and if it is, there may be nothing that can reduce the weight of his massive head. But there is reason to believe that Sain is suffering from some other overgrowth disorder, and if this is the case – there may be treatments that can help. Clinical geneticist, Dr Edwin Kirk, travels from Sydney Australia, to help Sain through with scans; x-rays; blood tests; and genetic tests, to get a proper, modern diagnosis for his condition.
Noah Southall was diagnosed with untreatable Proteus but a unique and unlikely use of immunosuppressive drugs is saving his life. When Noah was born soft tissue tumours began to grow all over his body – inside and out. He was not expected to live beyond two or three years old, but Noah is now eight years old. He goes to school, plays basketball, a happy, lively boy, thanks to the remarkable intervention by team from the Sydney Children’s Hospital – a team which included Dr Edwin Kirk.
In Lahore we will also meet Luddu. He is a beggar, like Sain, and also has a remarkable, deformed face – differently deformed from Sain, but notably deformed nonetheless. Luddu is different, also, in that he does not believe he is cursed by God, he is receiving medical treatment for his condition, and he is married.
My Shocking Story 4
Episode 4
Premieres Thursday, 1 April at 22:00
55-year-old Filipino, Rudy Santos, is a medical phenomenon; with four arms and three legs, he has one of the rarest conditions known to man – a parasitic twin.
Rudy, know as ‘Octoman’, made a name for himself out of his condition, touring carnivals and freak shows during the 70s and 80s - but hard times forced him into seclusion where he has lived in poverty for 10 years. He has remained a local legend on the carnival circuit in spite of his mysterious disappearance for over a decade.
Now Rudy, the oldest parasitic twins in the world, is forced to confront his past and face his future for the sake of himself and his family. Cameras follow him on the emotional journey, as he faces medical opinion for the first time, in the form of the Philippines’ foremost authority in conjoined twin separation – Vicente Gomez.
Rudy undergoes a series of examinations from Vicente and his team of medical experts to find out for the first time how his twin is formed within him, and what of his twin exists – whether it has a spine, and what organs? He will also find out if surgery is possible for him at this late age. While waiting for the results of the examinations, Rudy makes the emotional journey back to his family home where his 11 brothers and sisters have been praying for his return, and he introduces his daughter to the rest of the family for the first time.
As Rudy decides if the offer of life-changing free surgery outweighs the risks such a complicated procedure brings, his compelling story reveals an inspiring character who, in spite of his disability, has never viewed his condition as debilitating. Can he say goodbye to his twin?

Episode 4: Neo-Nazi Gangs of Moscow (TX: Sunday, 4 April at 22:00)
Ross Kemp gets inside Moscow’s vicious Neo-Nazi gangs and discovers who is behind the recent wave of racist attacks.
It’s estimated that 40% of Russia’s population is foreign – many of the migrants come from countries that were part of the former Soviet Union. It has been estimated that Russia currently needs seven-million migrants a year to keep the economy afloat. But most Russians don’t see it that way… Ross uncovers the extent to which the Nazi, or National Socialist, groups are gaining power in the country: it would seem that at best the police turn a blind eye to racism, at worse actively endorse it. And Ross meets one Member of Parliament who openly promotes Nazi ideology. Ross joins one Neo Nazi group during their training and through a series of tests -which include him being set on fire - he gains their trust. They invite him back to their secret headquarters where he meets some seriously disturbing individuals and uncovers the heart of their violent organisation.
