Africa Umoja – The Spirit of Togetherness is finally coming to the South African State Theatre after its longest run at the Victory Theatre.
Opening on 10 April 2010, Africa Umoja is a musical theatre production that transports the audience back into the history of South African music and dance. The story dances through the shebeens and cultural melting pot of Sophiatown. While the heart is saddened by the cold stories of forced removals, the feet continue to stomp along with the explosions of gumboot dancing.
The audiences will relate to names such as the late Miriam Makeba and Dolly Rathebe, while a thread of gospel music running the story reflects on the huge amount of faith and courage which saw black South Africans through some of the country’s stormiest historical passages.
The production, created by Todd Twala and Thembi Nyandeni, consists of fifty cast members coming from a variety of backgrounds. Africa Umoja will run at the State Theatre until on 2 May 2010.
