The South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) took place over the weekend of 27 October at a gala evening at Gallagher Estate. The event is eagerly anticipated by producers, performers, broadcasters and audiences. On the night, Ochre Media’s Ochre Moving Pictures (OMP) walked away with three of the prestigious Golden Horn Awards, even though there was some strong competition. The group’s television drama Gaz’lam was nominated for two of the awards in the categories Best Supporting Actress in a TV Drama and Best Supporting Actor in a TV Drama. Bayo Jwalo plays Kim in the show, and walked away with Best Supporting Actress. The show’s producer Bronwyn Berry was very excited by the award, stating, “Gaz’lam was produced more than two years ago and it is still a firm favourite with audiences evidenced by its many nominations and awards. This proves that it is a real classic in the landscape of South African television”. One of the best-loved soap operas in South Africa, Scandal!, received four nominations: Best Actor in a Soap; Best Supporting Actor in a Soap; Best Post-production in a TV Soap; and Best Music Composition in a Soap. The show’s Siyabonga Twala, who plays Vusi Zwane, scooped the award for Best Actor in a TV Soap. Choice, which is a prime-time edutainment series, was nominated for and won the Award for Best Talk Show. Levern Engel, the Chief Executive of Ochre Moving Pictures, stated, “I am grateful to be working with an amazing array of talent who together put in an incredible amount of work and commitment to creating memorable viewing experiences. The awards are a tribute to their passion and drive that continues to ensure that OMP”. Series included in OMP’s array of award-winning stable include Zola 7 and Takalani Sesame.
