MultiChoice subscribes to the 1996 TV Parental Guidelines, a rating system for parents with information on all TV programmes, with the aim of protecting children from harmful material.

Content in South Africa is rated by the Film and Publication Board with a V for violence; S for sex; L for strong language; N for nudity; and P for prejudice.

The Multichoice decoder and smart card set-up places power by remote control (to block viewing) firmly in parents' hands. Your key is your four-digit Parental PIN.

Parents can block viewing by age group suitability. (Family; PG13; 16; 18; and R18.)

Family and PG 13 are advisory. All others are legally restrictive.

MultiChoice provides three ways for parents to censor children's viewing:
a) Total Block; b) Service Block; c) No Block.

Parents can use the remote to type in the Parental Pin to over-ride the first two.
No Block over-rides all Parental settings. Parents can re-instate previous settings with a single setting change.
