Supported by a grant from the Department of Arts and Culture in honour of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Tap Roots! (Footsteps of Memory) is cross-cultural entertainment spectacle with one dynamic dance form at its core: tap.

With musical direction by Bheki Khoza and music and lyrics by the SAMA-winning duo Jaziel Brothers, Tap Roots! features scintillating choreography by Standard Bank Young Artist winner, Thabo Rapoo – all under the artistic direction of ka Ncube.

This exuberant musical fiesta features a large top-rate cast that includes Desmond Dube; Mfana Jones Hlope; Thabo Seabi; Tladi Moletsane; Sibulele Gcilitshane; and Amos Ketlele. It is based on the true story of Janet Hampton-Carpede (who also stars in the production), a South African singer and dancer who toured the world with Ipi Tombi before settling in the USA.

Her tale forms the basis for Tap Roots!, which tells of a welcome-home party in Soweto for an aunt who has been in exile for 27 years. During the festivities, a group of young people from different cultural groups are transported on a ride into South Africa’s rich dance heritage, from the energy of Indian and coloured dance to European and African influences – and thereby consolidate their national identity.

Tap Roots! explores the rich cultural textures of South Africa, as KaNcube boldly marries the golden era of tap dancing with South Africa’s 'born free' hip-hop generation through tap dance, which forms the thread that binds the rich tapestry of traditional African dance.

Set design is by Nduka Mtambo, with lighting by Nomvula Molepo and costumes by Nthati Matshidiso. The show is produced by Mpho Molepo, who heads up the Southern African Theatre Initiative.
