Coyote, who was born on 17 August 1955, passed away on 5 July at Helen Joseph Hospital after a short illness caused by pneumonia. Celebrating the iconic cultural hero’s body of work in the most dignified and flamboyant way will certainly be befitting as a send-off.

“We celebrate his ingenuity; we embrace his giving without being asked; and cherish his gravel sand-papered voice that became his trademark,” says his fellow Stimela band member, Ray 'Chikapa' Phiri. “Can you imagine a couple of minutes afforded to this great-departed soul by hearing his voice on radio pleading with us to See The World Through The Eyes Of A Child. Coyote was no ordinary crooner, this explains the reason there are no singers that have successfully copied his vocal prowess.”

Coyote’s talent and conviction saw him grace stages and theatres from an early age. He endeared himself to multitudes through his profound and rich vocal mastery that defied any categorisation. As a singer he could waltz from one note to the other sans pain. His showmanship; electrifying stage-antics; and understanding of a lyrical content in a song charmed many audiences.

“He rode with the punches, prevailed through all hardships of his chosen career and fine-tuned a way of hiding his pain by sharing his inner most feelings through song. Coyote should be celebrated for contributing in the most unselfish way as a champion of social cohesion,” concluded Phiri.

Nana Coyote’s funeral service will be from 09:00 to 12:00 on Sunday, 18 July at Vanderbijl Park Cemetery, Vereeniging in the Vaal.
