SAfm and the Independent Newspaper group have scooped two awards each in the Western Cape Vodacom Journalist of the Year Regional Awards. Candice Bailey of the Cape Argus won the Editor’s Choice award, and Die Burger’s Elsabé Brits and Melanie Gosling of the Cape Times shared the Print Feature award. Gosling was awarded for her in-depth series on the transport crisis in the Western Cape and Brits’ “fascinating understanding of science” was awarded. SAfm’s Mercedes Besant and Lulama Dlepu took the radio feature and radio news awards respectively. Besant reported on an isolated and almost forgotten community in the platteland, and Dlepu was recognised on the coverage given of a parliamentary debate. Well-renowned cartoonist, Zapiro, walked away with the Cartoonist category award for his “101 Uses for a Condom” piece published in the Sunday Times. The following outstanding journalists were awarded: Finance/Economic: Bruce Cameron, Personal Finance – for his six-month investigation into financial services company, Alexander Forbes. Columnist: André le Roux from Sarie, for his column on the complexity of relationships. TV Feature: John Bailey, SABC2, Fokus, for his piece on the SALT telescope. TV News: Natasha Landman, e.tv , for her coverage of the Baby Jordan murder. Print News: Rowan Philp, Sunday Times for his articles on issues such as the collapse of the power supply to the Western Cape. Photography: Fanie Jason for his photographs “of unusual beauty and social intrigue.”
